Kathryn Lee. Bruns Senior Counsel

Kathryn Lee Bruns has been with Faraci Lange since 2007 and focuses her practice on appellate advocacy and personal injury litigation, including wrongful death, product liability, medical malpractice, automobile negligence, and vaccine injury. She has extensive experience litigating cases in New York State and Federal Courts. Katie has worked to obtain substantial recoveries on behalf of the firm’s clients who have been severely injured due to the negligence and wrongful conduct of others. She finds it a privilege to serve the firm’s clients and their families who have been forced to cope with the effects of devastating injuries and even the tragic death of family members. Katie also successfully resolves cases before the United States Court of Federal Claims involving injuries sustained by adults and as part of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program.

In 2019, Katie won a Top Women in Law award by the Rochester Business Journal and New York Daily Record’s as part of its Excellence in Law honors. Katie has been selected in Best Lawyers in America in the area of personal injury litigation since 2018. She has also been named as one of Upstate New York’s Super Lawyers every year since 2017.

Katie is an expert in Federal and New York practice and procedure, and is a skillful legal writer. She has been a lecturer on the topics of effective appellate advocacy and Federal Court practice and procedure at continuing legal education programs presented by the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers and the New York State Bar Association. Katie credits her love of procedure and written advocacy to the fact that she spent seven of her first ten years of her career working in two judicial clerkships. In 1999, Katie completed a clerkship with the New York State Appellate Division, Fourth Department, where she worked on a wide variety of civil and criminal appeals. In 2002, she accepted an appointment as a confidential law clerk to the Hon. David G. Larimer, then Chief Judge for U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York. During her five years as a federal court law clerk, Katie gained invaluable experience working closely with the District Court in preparing for and deciding complex civil dispositive motions involving a broad array of New York and federal law, and assisting the Court with managing all phases of trials, including pre-trial motions, evidentiary issues, jury instructions and verdict sheets. During these clerkships, she witnessed from behind the scenes the powerful impact excellent legal writing and thorough procedural knowledge can have in achieving results for clients during litigation.

In addition to her personal injury practice, Katie has collaborated with other law firms to prosecute complex civil cases in the Federal District Courts in New York in the area of consumer protection. She currently represents a class of patients of local hospitals who, in violation of New York State law, were overcharged for copies of their medical records. Most recently, she was part of a successful team who secured a settlement worth more than $10 million in the form of injunctive relief for clients in a class action on behalf of millions of health plan subscribers whose personal and health information was compromised during a massive data breach.

Katie is a member of the Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys, the Monroe County Bar Association, and the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers. During her 25 year career as an attorney in the greater Rochester area, Katie has served on or chaired numerous bar association committees, including the Monroe County Bar Association’s Judiciary Committee, GRAWA’s Women’s Health and Nominations Committees, and she served as a Lawyers for Learning Volunteer. Early in her career, she enjoyed the mentorship afforded by being an active member of the Rochester Inns of Court, and served the Inn as its Secretary for two terms.

An active member of her community, Katie serves on the Board of Directors of the Braddock Bay Bird Observatory, a non-profit organization dedicated to ornithological research, education, and conservation, and has been serving as Board Secretary since 2017. Katie also served as a development volunteer for Camp DayDreams, a program affiliated with the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester that empowers Rochester’s urban youth to serve themselves, their families, and their community through its “Camp & Grow” program.

Katie received her B.A. from the University of Minnesota and earned her J.D., cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1997, where she earned the Robert J. Connelly Award for Excellence in Trial Technique and was selected for the Order of Barristers. During law school, she served as the Head Note and Comment editor of the Buffalo Law Review and as a member of the Buffalo Moot Court Board and the Jessup International Law Moot Court Board.

Katie loves spending time with her husband and daughter, as well as hiking, birding, reading, meditation, and yoga.
