Identity Theft Possibly Related to Excellus Hack

|

Batavia Police say identity theft complaints have been coming in that may be connected to the Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield cyber-attack announcement.

Excellus announced the breach on September 9. In a statement, the company said sensitive information like social security numbers could have been compromised for about 10 million people.

Batavia Police stated that, of the several complaints, one is possibly connected to the Excellus hack. Investigators are looking at the other complaints to check for an Excellus connection.

Batavia police released the following information on Friday:

The Batavia Police Department would like to clarify that the Identity Theft cases we have received may POSSIBLY be associated with the Excellus Data Breach. In all cases of Identity Theft there are many possibly ways information can become compromised. All possibilities are being investigated in this instance. At this time, there have been no direct links between the fraudulent Comcast Accounts and the Excellus incident other than one victim stating that they had coverage with BlueCross BlueShield at one time. The Batavia Police Department is working with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to determine if these cases could be related to the data breach."

Detective Eric Hill said most of the complaints had to do with fraudulent Comcast accounts opened in other parts of the country.

"The reports are just coming in recently, and they've mainly been because people are getting collection notices in reference to these accounts," said Detective Hill.
