Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of drugs that are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and other heartburn related conditions. These drugs reduce the amount of acid in an individual's stomach and can also be prescribed to treat stomach ulcers and infections.
Proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec and Nexium, are commonly used in the United States, with an average of approximately 15 million national users.
Several studies have linked PPI drug with a 20-50% higher risk of chronic kidney disease, including research published in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal in February 2016, as well as by the American Society of Nephrology in April 2016.
Symptoms of chronic kidney disease include:
- High blood pressure
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of sleep
- Swelling of feet/ankles
- Cramps and muscle twitches
- Shortness of breath
