Following the recall of DePuy Orthopaedics ASR metal-on-metal hip implant in August 2010, the data on the premature failure of all metal-on-metal implants has been alarming. These hip implants that were touted by the industry as an innovative orthopedic breakthrough have proven to be disastrous for thousands of Americans.
On February 11, 2011, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a patient advisory on metal-on-metal hip implants. The advisory states that the FDA was in the process of gathering and reviewing all available information about metal-on-metal hip implants to be reviewed in preparation for FDA panels convened on June 27-28, 2012 and again on September 21, 2012.
